The MUEC carries out projects in the areas of urban planning, active and public transportation, greening and urban agriculture. It promotes citizen participation in all of its projects.

The Saint-Pierre Woonerf is an example of a Dutch convivial street concept, implemented in an alleyway in the Sud-Ouest borough. The MUEC led citizen consultation evenings with residents.

Cities for People is a Canada-wide initiative aimed at making cities more sustainable, more resilient and more human. It is led by organizations across the country tasked with supporting projects focused on four major themes: citizen spaces, cityscapes, new economies, and art and society. Cities for People is an initiative of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.

Since 2012, the MUEC has been working on a project called Greening Walls and Roofs of the City thanks to financial support from the Verdir campaign of the Conférence régionale des élus de Montréal. The goal is to reduce the urban heat island effect by greening horizontal and vertical surfaces.


Habitations Des Érables is a housing complex in Gabriel-Sagard, a neighbourhood in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough—an urban area crisscrossed by very busy roads. Mainly families live in the complex’s 42 apartments.

Surrounded by busy roads, asphalt and industry, Habitations De la Merci is located in the middle of an urban heat island in Sainte-Lucie, a neighbourhood in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough. This complex is made up of three buildings that house people living alone, families and seniors.
